Huntington Beach, Calif. — The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) selected the 2021-22 Golden West College men's water polo team as a Scholar team award recipient.
“Not only were they the 2021 CCCAA state champions and competed at the highest level in the pool, but the team also competed just as hard in the classroom,” says GWC Athletic Director Danny Johnson.
To be selected as the scholar team award recipient a minimum of a team 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale needs to be earned - the Rustlers earned a 3.39 team GPA while earning their fifth consecutive state championship.
“I’m proud of the academic success of our men’s water polo team,” says Men’s Water Polo coach Scott Taylor. “This is a great honor for us as a program and team. These student athletes not only won a state championship, but this academic accomplishment as a group is noteworthy and they deserve a lot of credit.”
Golden West had seven student-athletes with a 4.0 and 12 more members with a 3.0 or better. The team finished 28-2 while capturing the Orange Empire Conference and SoCal Regional titles.
The Scholar Team Award is the highest academic team achievement given annually by the CCCAA. In addition to all team members excelling academically, the team also should have demonstrated better-than-average accomplishments in intercollegiate athletic competition.
